The Morphology and Molecular Phylogeny of Epizoanthus Planus in Japanese Waters

Authors:Inoue Komatu

Abstract

Epizoanthus planus is the only existed species described zoantharian connected with echinoderms. It is reported to live on the spines of living sea urchins in the Indian and East China sea. While detailed characters are still yet to be studied. This paper states the first record of E. planus from Japanese waters. This new study will expand the number of Epizoanthus species in Japanese waters to 5 species. At present, a number of taxonomy and diversity studies mainly record species from SCUBA-based collections in Japanese waters, zoantharians in deeper waters would be easily neglected. This paper emphasizes the significance of the diversity of species in deeper waters and helps to better comprehend the varieties of Zoantharia.
